Lisa and ASL
To Lisa: I know it's not your favorite thing when I brag about you to everyone I know, but you have to forgive me for this one. Not everyone knows how hard you worked for this, but we do. This is a Big Moment in your life and I want you to really enjoy it.
On August 4, 2017, Lisa received a letter telling her she'd been admitted
into the Language Interpreter Program at Lansing Community College (LCC). It was a day for huge celebration around our house. This was the culmination of nearly 2 years of preparation.
Lisa discovered ASL during her undergraduate studies at Adrian College. After finishing her B.A. in English, she moved to Lansing and embarked on a new adventure: studying for certification in American Sign Language.
After some research, Lisa decided that the program at LCC was the best fit for her so she started taking classes and preparing herself for the once-a-year screening process. She didn't make it into the program in 2016, but resolved to try again in 2017.
Lisa's screening was scheduled for the first Wednesday in July. On Thursday night the week before, she had an accident at the house and ended up in the ER with a mild concussion. She did poorly on her quizzes in class on Monday and afterwards, talked to her teachers and her mentor. They worked with her to let her re-take some of the quizzes, but Lisa decided she was going to go ahead with the screening. She did everything she could to take care of herself in the days leading to the screening and woke up that morning feeling confident and ready to go.
The screening was over by 9:00 and I got a call at 9:15 from Lisa. She was outside her apartment building, feeling exhausted and dizzy. We got her to bed and she slept the rest of the day, catching up on some much-needed rest.
Lisa's got plenty of work in front of her, but she loves the school, the program, and her teachers, so she's very excited to enter this new period of her life.
